National 4 PE is divided into two units:

1. factors impacting on performance
2. performance.

Factors impacting performance is assessed by the completion of a 60-mark portfolio. The portfolio is completed during class time and is sent to the SQA to be marked. It is worth 50% of the learner's overall grade.

The performance is designed to assess the candidate's ability to effectively perform in two different physical activities. Each performance is a single event and should be in a challenging/demanding context for the performer. Each performance is worth 30 marks, making the whole unit worth 50% of the learner's overall grade.
